Philadelphia Training Procedure

Clearance Delivery/Ground

  • Level 1 & 2 material covered in Level Specific Training Criteria
  • Philadelphia's Valid Exits and Gates
    • Student should be able to tell which fixes/VORs belong to which gate
    • Student should understand sequencing based on the exit chart (located at the top right of the Ground section of the PHL SOP)
  • Preferred Route Database (PRD) usage
  • Common airway and route amendments
  • Philadelphia's departure procedures
    • Identification of the appropriate initial climb altitude
    • Identification of the appropriate departure controller
  • Basic Class Bravo VFR Procedures (Class B VFR Operations)
    • Student should understand the use of discrete squawk codes
    • Student should understand the assignment of initial altitude
    • Student should understand when to specify the departure frequency
    • Student should understand the weather minimums for VFR flight
  • Departure sequencing and separation
  • Familiarization with the airport diagram
  • Airport-specific movement and non-movement areas
  • Airport runway ownership and coordination procedures
    • Student should understand the proper phraseology for coordination of runway crossings and blanket crossings
  • Appropriate position relief and transfer of control procedures (Signing On and Signing Off, Position Relief Briefings)

Local

  • Level 3 material covered in Level Specific Training Criteria
  • Compliance with facility runway selection criteria
  • Facility specific departure heading procedures
  • Local VFR and Class Bravo procedures including departures, arrivals, overflights and flight-following (Class B VFR Operations)
  • Helicopter operations
  • Consolidated Wake Turbulence separation
  • Tower radar display
  • Knowledge of the airspace and its boundaries
  • Knowledge of unique facility operations, such as intersecting runway and parallel runway procedures
  • Missed approach procedures and how they can be affected by simultaneous departures
  • Tower and TRACON LOA
  • Appropriate position relief and transfer of control procedures (Signing On and Signing Off, Position Relief Briefings)
