Climb via SID Phraseology

Rev. 5 — Revised: 2025-09-30

Introduction

The FAA recently released an update to the 7110.65 (specifically subpara. 4-2) with regards to the Climb via SID phraseology. Usage of Climb via SID phraseology has changed in order to prevent pilots from inadvertently forgetting top altitudes.

Application

Chart
Chart

The following outlines the usage of Climb via SID Phraseology:

  • If the DP does NOT contain published crossing restrictions or contains a radar vector segment with published crossing restrictions after the radar vector segment:
PHRASEOLOGY
Maintain (altitude)

For all other DPs:

PHRASEOLOGY
Climb via SID
And if you wish to provide an interim altitude that is NOT provided on the chart:
PHRASEOLOGY
Climb via SID except maintain (altitude)

Notes

  1. Except Maintain cannot be used to reinforce the top altitude or a published crossing restriction.
  2. An Crossing Restriction consists of a specific point (eg: LGA R-220 or MASTT) and an altitude restriction. This does not include informational altitudes or engagement points used to make turns (i.e.: at or above 600 feet, turn right heading 055)
